This virtual program will draw people into a deeper communion with The Word, which was the divine life in Jesus and is the same life in us.
The Gospel of John, late 1st Century in origin, is a creative, contemplative, original take on the person of Jesus as the human presence of “The Word”. In this Gospel, the eternal Word is always speaking through Jesus. One book even refers to this Gospel as “tales of a Jewish Mystic.”
In this program, we will look at several of the “representational” figures in their encounters with Jesus as well as investigate the rich symbols like bread and light, that Jesus uses to describe himself in John’s Gospel.
This is more than a chapter and verse bible study about John’s Gospel. We will enter into mind of the evangelist who wrote “in the Word” and creatively bring “living in the Word” into the 21st century.
This program will include short presentations, some quiet periods for reading and journaling, and group conversation.
While a variety of sources have been used in preparation for this program, a key work used was Written That You May Believe by Sandra Schneiders.
Session 1: Chapter 1 and Chapter 3. What does the Word as light mean for us? Who was Nicodemus (Chapter 3)and who does he represent today?
Session 2: Chapter 4. How is the Word “living water” for us today? Who was the Samaritan woman and who does she represent today?
Session 3: Chapter 5 and 6. How is the Word bread? Who was the paralyzed man and who does he represent today?
Session 4: Chapter 9 and 11. How is the Word Resurrection and Life? Who was the man born blind and who does he represent today?
