Teilhard De Chardin S.J. and Contemporary Mysticism

Discover the inspiring mysticism of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, where science, faith, and love for the world unite. This program will be held in person at the Jesuit Retreat Center.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin S.J. (1881-1955) was a scientist and a mystic. He was first person to bring together evolutionary science and theology. Using his writings, especially his earliest ones, we will explore his understanding of mysticism, a mysticism connecting scientific knowledge, love for the world, and the Indwelling of God in all existence. The later Teilhard called “The Divine Milieu.” We will explore how he prayed and how it can enrich our own unifying with God. Teilhard began to write on mysticism not in a monastery but during the horrific trench warfare of World War 1, where he was a stretcher-bearer for the French army.

This course will include short presentations, quiet times for reflection and journaling, prayer, the sharing of insights, and lunch.

Facilitator: Mike Reiling M.Ed.is a retired high school theology teacher is serious student of Teilhard de Chardin S.J. For the past nine years, Mike has leads classes on contemporary spirituality using Chardin’s evolutionary and mystical perspective.
