How we experience God and the divine, the structure and format of how we pray, and what we seek in a spiritual or religious community are all impacted by our distinctive yet common personality types. By better understanding ourselves through the lens of Personality Type and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®, we may better understand our own prayer lives and approach to spirituality.
Through presentation and interactive conversation, as well as personal and communal prayer time and experiences, we will explore the intersection between personality, prayer, and spirituality. Participants will be exposed to four major prayer styles throughout the course of the weekend and have the chance to explore methods and practices of prayer that might best suit their personality and inform their journey of faith.
There is an optional Friday evening component for those who are unfamiliar or new to Personality Type or for those who would like a refresher before diving in on Saturday morning.
Friday evening (optional), 7:00 – 9:00 pm: Participants in this part of the program will take the official Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® online in advance of the evening. Friday will include an introduction to Personality Type and the opportunity to identity one’s “true” or “best fit” type in preparation for the remainder of the program.
Saturday, 9:00 am – Sunday, 11:00 am: The program begins with an exercise to affirm one’s home base according to Carl Jung’s Psychological Type profile. The first session will also include presentation and conversation on the connections between Personality Type and spirituality/prayer. The remainder of the program will be divided into segments exploring a variety of prayer types, practices, and methods of prayer.
Presenter and Facilitator: Bill Hobbs, EdD, Associate Director, Jesuit Retreat Center. Bill is a certified MBTI Master Practitioner and has served as a board member of the Association of Psychological Type International. He has presented on Personality Type to numerous schools, organizations, and conferences. This program is based on a retreat he offered during the summer of 2018 to the Office of Ignatian Spirituality of the Northeast and Maryland Provinces of the Society of Jesus.
