Dear Friends:

Here at the Retreat House we are seriously implementing the concept of ‘journey’ or ‘pilgrimage’, something that Pope Francis has mentioned frequently in his talks. As a Jesuit, he is familiar with the journey St. Ignatius took from Spain to Rome in an effort to discern God’s will for him in his newly energized faith.

We are each called to make such a journey even if we are comfortable in our faith. You might say that consciously or not, you are making a journey; after all, you are living and breathing, working and playing. So, you are journeying. You think. But, if you aren’t conscious of the journey, you aren’t really making it. You are letting life happen to you. In fact, sometimes when you catch your breath and pause a little, you wonder why things aren’t working so well. You’re doing everything the right way: working to support a family, helping your children with their needs, attending Mass weekly, helping neighbors when possible. So on and so on.

But are you journeying? Seeking new ways to satisfy a spiritual hunger you haven’t had the time to nourish? Trying different ways to pray? Reading invigorating books on spirituality? Looking for a spiritual companion, a spiritual director?

We can help. Our Jesuit roots and charism inspire the roadmap you need to make a pilgrimage in the faith, to become happier—just as God wants you to be.

I am proud to acknowledge that our Lay Leadership Program has developed “pilgrimage” as an initiative to the parish 8-week Ignatian retreat, both of which will be held at St. Angela Merici Parish. And the graduates of the Ignatian Spirituality Institute at John Carroll will be offering, “Walking the Pilgrim Way”, a four-part series to help deepen the experience of the Spiritual Exercises.

As you decide to embark on a spiritual journey or pilgrimage as Pope Francis advocates, make a resolution to dare something different in your spiritual life. Sign up for a retreat day or weekend. Ask us about spiritual direction. I encourage you to please read about the wonderful programs we are offering over the next few months and sign up for something.

In Christ’s embracing love,

Sr. Mary Ann Flannery, S.C.
